World’s First Industrial-Scale Carbon Capture Plant at Cement Facility Completed

  • Emissions Reduction: The plant will capture up to 400,000 metric tons of CO₂ annually, supporting net-zero cement production.
  • Industry Milestone: This is the first full-scale carbon capture facility in the cement sector, setting a precedent for future projects.
  • Collaborative Success: SLB Capturi, Heidelberg Materials, and Aker Solutions led the effort, with operations set to begin in 2025.

Oslo, Norway, Dec 6, 2024 (ESG NEWS) – SLB Capturi has achieved a major milestone with the completion of the world’s first industrial-scale carbon capture plant at Heidelberg Materials’ cement facility in Brevik, Norway. This groundbreaking facility will enable net-zero cement production while maintaining product quality and strength.

The plant, a key part of Europe’s Longship CCS project, is designed to capture 400,000 metric tons of CO₂ annually and is now ready for testing and commissioning. Operations are expected to begin in 2025.

A Milestone for the Cement Industry

Due to the high inherent emissions of cement production, carbon capture is essential for the sector to achieve net-zero goals. The Brevik CCS plant integrates carbon capture, compression, heat systems, and storage facilities to significantly reduce emissions.
