Verra Registers First Carbon Project Under ICVCM-Approved Methodology

  • First-of-its-kind registration: The Tond Tenga project is the first to use a Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) methodology approved under the ICVCM’s Core Carbon Principles (CCPs).
  • High-impact restoration: The initiative will restore over 12,000 hectares of degraded land in Burkina Faso and remove more than 3.1 million metric tons of CO₂e over 40 years.
  • Community and climate benefits: The project integrates sustainable livelihoods, biodiversity conservation, and gender-inclusive community empowerment.

Verra has officially registered the Tond Tenga project in Burkina Faso, the first initiative to use a Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) methodology approved under the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM)’s Core Carbon Principles (CCPs).

The project uses VM0047, Verra’s methodology for Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation, approved by the ICVCM in December 2024. All carbon credits generated by the project will carry the CCP label, marking a new level of integrity and credibility in the voluntary carbon market.

This project demonstrates what high-integrity carbon markets can deliver: measurable climate results, community resilience, and landscape restoration at scale. As the first project to register under a CCP-approved VCS methodology, the Tond Tenga project illustrates the high-quality climate action that ICVCM-approved methodologies can catalyze,” said Mandy Rambharos, Chief Executive Officer, Verra.

Spanning four regions in Burkina Faso, the Tond Tenga project will restore more than 12,000 hectares of degraded land through native tree planting and agroforestry. Over its 40-year crediting period, the initiative is projected to remove more than 3.1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) from the atmosphere.

Beyond carbon reduction, the project is designed to deliver tangible socio-economic and environmental co-benefits—including sustainable livelihoods, biodiversity conservation, and gender-inclusive community empowerment.

This registration marks a pivotal moment for Verra and the voluntary carbon market, showcasing how ICVCM-approved methodologies developed within the VCS Program can deliver high-integrity, scalable climate solutions for both the planet and local communities.
