SBTi Invites Automakers to Pilot Draft Net-Zero Standard

  • New framework sets science-based pathways for automakers and suppliers to align with net-zero by 2050
  • Pilot test aims to refine the draft with real-world industry feedback before launch
  • Companies across the automotive value chain encouraged to apply by September 12

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is calling on automakers and auto parts manufacturers to join the pilot testing of its draft Automotive Sector Net-Zero Standard—a sector-specific framework to help drive greenhouse gas reductions across the industry.

Designed to align with global climate goals, the draft Standard builds on the SBTi’s Land Transport Guidance and the draft Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2. It incorporates sector-specific criteria for scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, giving companies a structured pathway to align with net-zero by 2050.

Following an initial consultation, the SBTi is refining the draft and will launch pilot testing alongside a second consultation in Q4 this year. The pilot is intended to ensure the Standard is both scientifically robust and practical to implement.

Participating companies will have access to the SBTi’s latest methodologies and tools, using real-world data to identify implementation challenges and validate methodological assumptions,” the initiative said.

By joining, companies will play a direct role in shaping the final Standard while preparing themselves to set targets once it is formally published. Applications are open to businesses of all sizes and models across the automotive value chain.

Interested organizations must submit their applications by September 12, with full details on the pilot’s objectives, structure, and selection criteria available in the SBTi Automotive Pilot Test Terms of Reference.
