Orbital Materials, Civo Launch Pilot to Embed Carbon Removal Technology in UK Data Centers

  • Carbon Removal Technology Piloted in Data Centers: Orbital’s AI-developed carbon capture system will be tested at Civo’s UK data center by the end of 2025.
  • Addressing Major Emissions Source: With data centers projected to emit 2.5B tons of CO₂-equivalent by 2030, the collaboration targets a critical sustainability gap.
  • AI-Accelerated Materials Development: Orbital’s platform has delivered a 10x improvement in carbon capture performance, drastically reducing development timelines.

Orbital Materials and cloud service provider Civo have entered a strategic partnership to pilot carbon removal technology within data centers—aiming to transform a high-emission industry with advanced, AI-powered materials.

Civo will deploy Orbital’s custom-built carbon removal system at its UK-based data center, offering a real-world testbed for new solutions in data center decarbonization and efficiency.

We are excited to partner with Civo to deploy our carbon removal technology for data centers which will help the data center industry transition to a more sustainable future. Our partnership with Civo will accelerate the development of our data center decarbonization and efficiency technologies,” said Jonathan Godwin, CEO and Co-Founder of Orbital.

Data centers currently account for about 1% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and Morgan Stanley research forecasts they could produce 2.5 billion tons of CO₂-equivalent emissions globally by 2030. Orbital and Civo’s initiative seeks to address this trajectory through innovation.

Orbital’s AI platform has already enabled a 10x improvement in the performance of its carbon capture materials—an advancement that significantly outpaces traditional R&D timelines. To support ongoing AI model training, Civo will provide Orbital with a high-performance compute cluster equipped with H200 NVIDIA GPUs.

We are thrilled to partner with Orbital Materials, a true innovator in the field of sustainable materials and technologies. Together, we can make a significant impact on reducing carbon emissions and driving a more sustainable future for our planet. With the growing investment in UK data centers and the UK government’s AI action plan, we must implement solutions now to reduce the environmental impact of the UK’s expanding data center capacity,” said Mark Boost, CEO of Civo.
