Microsoft, Acadia Launch Climate Investment Coalition Backing $9B in Renewable Projects

  • $9 Billion Investment Pipeline: The Climate and Communities Investment Coalition (CCIC) aims to develop 5 GW of renewable energy projects across the U.S. over the next five years.
  • Corporate-Led Clean Energy: The coalition accelerates corporate-led renewable energy financing, with Microsoft as an anchor member.
  • Community Impact Focus: Projects will expand access to clean energy for low-income households, create local jobs, and promote economic inclusion.

Launching the CCIC

Microsoft and Acadia Infrastructure Capital have partnered to launch the Climate and Communities Investment Coalition (CCIC), targeting a $9 billion pipeline of renewable energy projects across the U.S. The initiative, backed by Microsoft as an anchor member, aims to deliver at least 5 GW of renewable power over five years.

The mission of the CCIC is to help corporations support clean energy projects that provide community benefits in the United States. The CCIC is projected to facilitate the construction of at least 5 GW of renewable energy projects over five years. Collectively, these projects will help prevent approximately 15 billion pounds of carbon from entering the atmosphere per year and generate enough energy to power over 850,000 homes.

Dr. Brian O’Callaghan, Vice President at Acadia, emphasized the coalition’s mission:

“The CCIC’s reason for being is to accelerate corporate-led renewable energy financing with real tangible benefits to local communities.”

Goals and Social Benefits

The initiative seeks to help corporations meet environmental goals while delivering social benefits, including access to affordable clean energy, local employment, and support for diverse contractors.

First Project Success

The CCIC’s inaugural project, a 210 MW solar initiative in Texas, secured financing through Matrix Renewables and backing from Microsoft. Highlighting the coalition’s role, Danielle Decatur, Director of Environmental Justice at Microsoft, stated:

“The CCIC program provides us opportunities to meet our goals through high-quality renewable energy procurement.”

Vision for the Future

Acadia Managing Partner Tim Short shared the coalition’s broader vision:

“The CCIC seeks to offer its member corporations the ‘triple win’ of clean energy, improved earnings, and real-world impact.”

The coalition not only accelerates renewable energy rollouts but also helps businesses access Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to meet sustainability targets. These certificates allow companies to green their power supply or offset emissions in their supply chains.

Expanding Membership

With Microsoft’s leadership and Acadia’s expertise, the CCIC is actively recruiting additional corporations to join the coalition, amplifying its impact on the U.S. energy transition. Dr. O’Callaghan added:

“This initiative demonstrates how corporate actions can crowd-in other sources of capital to support a low-cost, reliable, and secure US energy system.”
