Kansai Electric Purchases 49% Stake in Iberdrola’s €1.3 bln Offshore Wind Project in Germany

  • Strategic Partnership: Iberdrola sells a 49% stake in Germany’s Windanker offshore wind farm to Japan’s Kansai Electric, retaining operational control.
  • Expanding Renewable Capacity: The 315 MW wind farm is set to be operational by late 2026, part of Iberdrola’s €15 billion offshore wind investment.
  • Global Decarbonization Push: Iberdrola leverages alliances to accelerate renewable energy growth and financial strength worldwide.

Iberdrola and Kansai Team Up on Offshore Wind

Iberdrola, a global leader in renewable energy, has partnered with Kansai Electric, Japan’s second-largest utility, in the €1.28 billion Windanker offshore wind project in Germany. Kansai will hold a 49% minority stake, while Iberdrola retains 51% and operational control.

This operation allows us to accelerate growth in offshore wind with a strategic partner like Kansai,” said Ignacio Galán, Iberdrola’s president.

The Windanker project, located in the German Baltic Sea, will feature 21 wind turbines with a combined capacity of 315 MW. The farm, already under construction, is expected to be operational by late 2026. All its energy production has been pre-sold under long-term contracts to industrial customers.

Offshore Wind Leadership

Iberdrola is doubling its offshore wind capacity from 2,400 MW to 4,800 MW by 2026. The company has already invested €15 billion in operational and under-construction offshore wind farms, including:

  • Saint Brieuc (France)
  • Wikinger and Baltic Eagle (Germany)
  • Vineyard Wind One (USA)
  • East Anglia One and Three (UK)

Additionally, Iberdrola holds seabed rights in regions including the UK, Europe, the USA, Australia, and Japan, securing its position in future renewable energy projects.

A Decarbonization Strategy Built on Alliances

The partnership with Kansai builds on Iberdrola’s strategy of forming global alliances to accelerate growth and drive decarbonization. Recent collaborations include:

  • Masdar: €15 billion co-investment in offshore wind and green hydrogen in Germany, the UK, and the USA.
  • Norges Bank: Co-investment in renewable projects, totaling 2,500 MW.
  • BP: Deployment of 11,700 EV fast-charging points and a green hydrogen plant in Spain.

These alliances strengthen Iberdrola’s financial standing while enabling the expansion of clean energy solutions worldwide.

Renewables like Windanker demonstrate the potential to promote Europe’s industrialization with indigenous, clean, and competitive energy,” Galán concluded.

Iberdrola’s partnership with Kansai highlights its commitment to sustainability and innovation, setting the stage for continued leadership in global renewable energy.
